Look for the Silver Lining is a 1919 popular song with music by Jerome Kern and lyrics by Buddy DeSylva. It was written for the Broadway show Zip, Goes a Million, but the show was not successful; it was published in 1920 and later reused in the musical Sally, where it was popularized by Marilyn Miller. The tune is a show tune - a pop standard from the Jazz Age. Judy Garland later sang it in Till the Clouds Roll By (1946), helping to keep the song well known, and the piece has been recorded by many artists since then, including Chet Baker, Aretha Franklin, Bing Crosby, Andy Williams, and Margaret Whiting. The sheet music was published by T. B. Harms in 1920, and Sally opened at the New Amsterdam Theatre on December 21, 1920, running for 570 performances. A 1949 biopic titled Look for the Silver Lining celebrates Marilyn Miller, and the song has appeared in radio and film contexts beyond the stage.
