Lulu Swing is a famous gypsy jazz tune composed by Lulu Reinhardt, a French guitarist who helped define the German gypsy jazz sound. The piece is based on the chord changes of Billy Strayhorn’s Take the A Train and is a staple of the German school with its aggressive attack and rolling chords. A well known recording appears on the 1982 album Gypsy-Swing by the Lulu Reinhardt-Dodi Schumacher Ensemble. Reinhardt was active from the mid 1970s to 2014 and played with several key groups that shaped the style, making Lulu Swing a landmark in the repertoire.
