Madalena is a Brazilian song written by Ivan Lins and Ronaldo Monteiro de Souza. It was first released by Elis Regina in 1970, and is regarded as a classic of Brazilian MPB. The tune blends melodic jazz-inflected pop with Brazilian rhythms, and Ivan Lins with Ronaldo Monteiro de Souza recorded it for the 1971 album Agora. The song gained international visibility when Ella Fitzgerald performed a live version in Santa Monica on June 2, 1972. The Portuguese lyrics feature a playful refrain that begins with “Ô Má, ô Madá, ô Madalê, ô Madalelelelê,” and the piece has been covered by many artists in various languages.
