Margie, also known as My Little Margie, is a 1920 jazz standard - composed by Con Conrad and J. Russel Robinson with lyrics by Benny Davis. The Original Dixieland Jazz Band introduced it in 1920 as a Victor 78 single - 18717-A, in a medley with Singin' the Blues, with Palesteena on the B-side. The song is named after Eddie Cantor's five-year-old daughter, and Cantor's 1921 recording helped push it to the top of the charts for five weeks. Over the years it has become a jazz standard - recorded and performed by many artists including Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Bing Crosby, Gene Krupa, Ray Charles, and others. It has appeared in films such as Stella Dallas (1937) and Margie (1946) - and in The Eddie Cantor Story (1953). An instrumental version was recorded for the 1962 LP There Is Nothing Like a Dame, with Pete Candoli and Conte Candoli on trumpets, Shelly Manne on drums, Jimmy Rowles on piano, Howard Roberts on guitar, and Gary Peacock on bass. In football lore it was the unofficial Preston North End club anthem in the 1950s and was played at Sir Tom Finney's funeral in 2014.
