Massachusetts is a 1967 pop song by the Bee Gees, written by Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb. The track, which blends pop with country and psychedelic touches, was released as a single on 19 September 1967 and later appeared on the 1968 album Horizontal. Robin Gibb sings lead, and the recording took place August 9-17, 1967 at IBC Studios in London with Bill Shepherd's orchestral arrangement. It became the Bee Gees' first UK No 1, topped charts in 12 other countries, sold over five million copies worldwide, and peaked at No 11 on the US Billboard Hot 100. The song was originally written for The Seekers, and the inspiration centers on homesickness after a trip to San Francisco, with the lights going out in Massachusetts as a symbol that everyone had gone to San Francisco.
