Maybe September is a jazz standard ballad written for the 1965-66 film The Oscar. The music was by Percy Faith with lyrics by Jay Livingston and Ray Evans. It was first released in 1966 by Tony Bennett for the film’s soundtrack, with Bennett’s vocal on the The Oscar album. A well known later version is Tony Bennett and Bill Evans on the album Together Again, recorded in 1976 and released in 1977. The tune has been covered by many artists including Joe Williams with the Robert Farnon Orchestra, Shirley Horn, Monty Alexander and Ranee Lee. The lyrics evoke a longing for love that may return in September, with images of a willow shade, a pillow on a morning world.
