Meditation, originally Meditação, is a bossa nova and jazz standard composed by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Newton Mendonça, with English lyrics by Norman Gimbel. The Portuguese tune was first recorded in 1959 by Maysa on the album Maysa é Maysa... é Maysa! It became a widely covered standard with early versions by João Gilberto (1960) and Jobim on The Composer of Desafinado, Plays (1963). A 1963 Pat Boone single reached the US charts. In Finland, Olavi Virta recorded it in 1963 with Finnish lyrics as Hymy, kukka ja rakkaus, and Erkki Liikanen did a Finnish version in 1967 titled Taas on hiljaisuus. The song remains a staple of the genre and has been performed by many artists including Astrud Gilberto, Frank Sinatra, Claudine Longet, Blossom Dearie, and Dexter Gordon.
