Moanin' is a hard bop jazz composition written by Bobby Timmons and first recorded by Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers for the album Moanin', released by Blue Note in January 1959. The track was recorded on October 30, 1958 at Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack and features Lee Morgan on trumpet, Benny Golson on tenor sax, Jymie Merritt on bass, and Blakey on drums, with Timmons on piano. The piece is built on a call and response melody in F minor, and Golson encouraged Timmons to add a bridge to form the complete tune. Later, Jon Hendricks added lyrics, and a version by Lambert, Hendricks & Ross helped popularize it further. Moanin' has become a jazz standard and helped spark the funky, back to roots movement in jazz. The recording and the album are both in the Grammy Hall of Fame, inducted in 1998 and 2001 respectively.
