Mr. Day is a John Coltrane tune on the 1962 Atlantic album Coltrane Plays the Blues. It was recorded on October 24, 1960 during sessions for My Favorite Things and was released in July 1962 after Coltrane had left Atlantic for Impulse Records. The track runs about 7:56 and features Coltrane on tenor sax (soprano on Blues to Bechet), with McCoy Tyner on piano, Steve Davis on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums. Musically, Mr. Day is built on a 12-bar blues form but in the bright key of F# major (concert Ab) and uses an unusual IV to bIII7 to I7 progression with prominent 13th chords for a mixolydian blues feel. An earlier Los Angeles version, titled Mr. Day (aka One and Four), was recorded in 1960 with Billy Higgins on drums.
