Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye is a 1969 pop song written by Gary DeCarlo, Dale Frashuer, and Paul Leka and recorded by Steam, a fictitious band created for the project. It was released as a Fontana single in November 1969 and appeared on the self titled Steam album. The track features a bluesy shuffle and a chant that spells out the hook, “na na na, hey hey goodbye,” with DeCarlo on lead vocals and Leka producing. It climbed to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in December 1969, holding the top spot for two weeks and becoming the last multi week No 1 of the 1960s. Steam did not tour as a band; the album cover showed a road group and the recording was a studio creation. The song has endured as a sporting anthem and pop culture staple, and it has been covered by artists including Bananarama in 1983 (UK top five) and The Nylons in 1987 (US top 20). By the early 21st century sales had surpassed several million copies.
