Night Dreamer is a 1964 jazz album by American saxophonist Wayne Shorter, released in November 1964 on Blue Note. It is Shorter's fourth album and his first as a Blue Note leader, featuring a stellar quintet with Lee Morgan on trumpet, McCoy Tyner on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums. The record blends modal jazz and post-bop and includes six Shorter originals: Night Dreamer, Oriental Folk Song, Virgo, Black Nile, Charcoal Blues and Armageddon. The title track Night Dreamer is a largely minor-key, 3/4 tune that rides a heavy groove, while the other pieces explore brisk blues, lyrical balladry and epic contrasts. The album marks a transitional moment in Shorter's writing as he moves toward a more economical, open-ended style, and it foreshadows his later work and his subsequent move to Miles Davis's band. A RVG Edition reissue with Nat Hentoff liner notes appeared in 1987, and a 2005 remaster followed.
