Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown) is a 1965 Beatles song from the album Rubber Soul. It was written mainly by John Lennon, with contributions from Paul McCartney, and credited to the Lennon–McCartney partnership. The track features a sitar played by George Harrison, marking the first appearance of an Indian instrument in a Western rock recording. Lyrically, Lennon draws on an extramarital affair in London, with the title referring to the style of pine wall paneling in the room. The song helped popularize Indian influences in rock, influencing the development of raga rock and world music, and was a number 1 hit in Australia when released there as a single with Nowhere Man in 1966. Rolling Stone ranked it 83 on its 2004 list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
