Nothing Rhymed is a soft rock song written and recorded by Irish singer-songwriter Gilbert O'Sullivan. It was released in 1970 as a single from the 1971 album Himself, produced by Gordon Mills, with the B-side Everybody Knows. The track was O'Sullivan's first UK hit, peaking at number 8 in the UK, number 2 in Ireland, and number 1 in the Netherlands. O'Sullivan has said he wrote the song after seeing television footage of starving children in Africa during the Nigerian Civil War, and the original recording features session bassist Herbie Flowers. The tune has been widely covered by artists such as Tom Jones, Yvonne Elliman, Burton Cummings, Emm Gryner, and Morrissey in concert, making it one of his enduring songs. It remains a classic example of early 1970s soft rock.
