Old Devil Moon is a popular jazz standard and show tune from the 1947 musical Finian's Rainbow. It was written by Burton Lane with lyrics by Yip Harburg and was introduced on Broadway by Ella Logan and Donald Richards. The song’s title comes from a line Harburg wrote for a previous work, and it centers on the irresistible, moonlit pull of love. The Broadway cast recording appeared in 1947, and the tune was later featured in the 1968 film version sung by Don Francks and Petula Clark. The piece is generally treated as a show tune and jazz standard and has been recorded by many artists—Margaret Whiting reached No 11 on the Billboard charts in 1947 with her version, Gene Krupa and His Orchestra reached No 21, Miles Davis included it on Blue Haze (1954), and other famous renditions include Sarah Vaughan, Frank Sinatra, Chet Baker, Judy Garland, Jamie Cullum, and Josh Groban.
