On the Sunny Side of the Street is a 1930 song composed by Jimmy McHugh with lyrics by Dorothy Fields. Some sources say Fats Waller contributed to the music but sold the rights. It was introduced in Lew Leslie's International Revue on Broadway, starring Harry Richman and Gertrude Lawrence. The first recording was by Ted Lewis in 1930, followed by Harry Richman, and the tune soon became a jazz standard recorded by many artists including Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra and Rod Stewart. Notable album appearances include Dizzy Gillespie's Sonny Side Up (1959) and Tommy Dorsey's charting version with The Sentimentalists in 1945, and it has appeared in films and TV such as JFK, Frasier, Cheers, and Perry Mason. The tune is commonly performed in different keys with Armstrong in C, Lewis in D, and Fitzgerald in G.
