One by One is a jazz composition written by Wayne Shorter. It was first released by Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers in 1963 on the album Ugetsu - a hard bop staple that features Blakey’s powerful drumming and a tight horn lineup. The tune runs about 9 minutes in the Blakey recordings. It later appears on the 1981 live album One by One - recorded in Milan, Italy in 1979 and released on the Palcoscenico label - performed by the Jazz Messengers with Valery Ponomarev, Bobby Watson, David Schnitter, James Williams, and Dennis Irwin. The 1981 version preserves the band’s muscular swinging style and sits alongside other Blakey classics on the album.
