One Note Samba, originally Samba de uma Nota Só, is a bossa nova and jazz standard composed by Antônio Carlos Jobim with Portuguese lyrics by Newton Mendonça and English lyrics by Jon Hendricks. It was first recorded by João Gilberto in 1960 for the album O Amor, o Sorriso e a Flor. The tune gained wide popularity on the Grammy winning Jazz Samba LP by Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd, released in 1962 and reaching number one on the Billboard 200 in 1963. The title refers to the opening melody, which starts with a long series of notes on a single pitch before moving into a more conventional melodic line in a bossa nova rhythm. Notable later recordings include Dizzy Gillespie, Sergio Mendes Brasil '66, Ella Fitzgerald, and Frank Sinatra in collaboration with Jobim.
