Opus de Funk is a hard driving Latin-swing jazz tune composed by Horace Silver. The original Horace Silver Trio version was recorded on November 23, 1953 in New York with Percy Heath on bass and Art Blakey on drums, and it was released by Blue Note on the 10-inch Horace Silver Trio, Vol. 2 and Art Blakey - Sabu, later appearing on the 12-inch Horace Silver Trio and Art Blakey-Sabu album. The piece is known for its catchy melody, advanced harmonic structure, and finger-snapping groove.
A notable early example in Silver’s catalog, Opus de Funk is also one of the first uses of the word funk in a song title. By 2014 there were more than 60 recorded versions. Silver later noted that Opus de Funk was one of only three of his compositions he did not own the rights to.
