Out of Nowhere is a popular jazz standard composed by Johnny Green with lyrics by Edward Heyman, published by Famous Music. It was popularized by Bing Crosby, whose March 30, 1931 Brunswick recording became his first solo No 1 hit; Crosby also sang it in the 1931 films Confessions of a Co-Ed and I Surrender Dear. The tune was first recorded in 1931 by Smith Ballew and His Orchestra, with other early 1931 versions by Leo Reisman, Ruth Etting and Roy Fox. Crosby re recorded it in 1954 for the album Bing: A Musical Autobiography. The song is known for its distinctive harmonic progression and has become a jazz standard with dozens of instrumental and vocal versions by artists such as Chet Baker, Ella Fitzgerald, Django Reinhardt and Coleman Hawkins, and it is commonly played in the key of G major.
