Oye Cómo Va is a mambo cha-cha-cha composed by Tito Puente in 1962 for the album El Rey Bravo on Tico Records. The original Puente recording features Santitos Colón on vocals and a piano tumbao; the refrain Oye cómo va, mi ritmo drives the tune, with an intro reminiscent of Cachao López's Chanchullo. The song gained worldwide fame when Santana transformed it into a Latin rock classic on the 1970 album Abraxas, adding electric guitar and organ and dropping the brass. Santana's version was released as a single in 1971, reaching number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100, number 11 on the Easy Listening chart, and number 32 on the R&B chart. Since then Oye Cómo Va has been covered by many artists and is celebrated as a milestone of Latin music hybridity and transnationality, with inductions into the Latin Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001 and the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2002.
