Palo Alto is a jazz tune led by alto saxophonist Lee Konitz, written and recorded in the early 1950s with Konitz in a small group setting. A classic Konitz piece from his Lennie Tristano–Warne Marsh circle, it is sometimes described as a contrafact of Strike Up the Band, based on similar musical structures. The widely circulated recording appears on the 1994 Giants Of Jazz compilation (Europe), Giants Of Jazz CD 53182, featuring Konitz with Arnold Fishkin (bass), Jeff Morton (drums), Billy Bauer (guitar), and Sal Mosca (piano) in a 2:34 performance. The tune also appears on Konitz’s 2008 album Palo Alto, illustrating its ongoing place in his jazz legacy.
