Pennies from Heaven is a 1936 American popular song with music by Arthur Johnston and lyrics by Johnny Burke. It was introduced by Bing Crosby with the Georgie Stoll Orchestra in the 1936 film Pennies from Heaven and released as a Decca single in October 1936. Crosby’s recording, made July 24, 1936, topped the charts for ten weeks and helped establish the tune as a standard; he also re-recorded it for the 1954 album Bing: A Musical Autobiography. The song is a pop and jazz standard and has been covered by Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra, Dinah Washington, Dean Martin, The Skyliners, and many others. Billie Holiday’s version appeared in 1936 and the track was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2004; The Skyliners reached #24 on the US Hot 100 with their 1960 cover. The tune was nominated for an Oscar in the film but did not win.
