Pensativa is a bossa nova jazz standard composed by American pianist Clare Fischer. It was first recorded in 1962 by a quintet led by Fischer and saxophonist Bud Shank, and released that year on the album Bossa Nova Jazz Samba - the tune runs about 3 minutes and 28 seconds. The piece, a classic extended 64-bar AABA form with 16-bar sections, is one of the first prominent bossa novas by a non-Brazilian composer and helped introduce the style to wider jazz audiences. It has since been widely recorded in many formats, including a famous 1964 Freddie Hubbard arrangement for Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers on Free for All. Fischer later added lyrics in 1984, which have been performed by Sandi Shoemake, Lisa Rich, Kaz Simmons, Iain Mackenzie, and others.
