Poetry Man is a 1974 song by American singer-songwriter Phoebe Snow. Written by Snow and produced by Dino Airali, it appears on her self-titled debut album Phoebe Snow (released June 1974) and was issued as a single in December 1974 on Shelter Records. Recorded in 1973 at A & R Recording in New York, the track blends blues, jazz and folk and features saxophonist Zoot Sims and percussion by Ralph MacDonald. It became Snowβs breakthrough hit, peaking at number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 in April 1975 and reaching number 1 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart for a week; it also topped Canadaβs listings. The song earned Snow a Best New Artist Grammy nomination in 1975. Lyrically it centers on a romance with a married man; Snow has said it was inspired by a personal situation and not about any famous person, despite rumors it was about Jackson Browne.
