Ponteio is a Brazilian tune written in the 1960s by Edu Lobo with lyrics by José Carlos Capinan. It was originally performed by Edu Lobo and quickly became a beloved MPB standard, later covered by artists such as Astrud Gilberto, Sergio Mendes, and Woody Herman. The piece appears on Edu Lobo's live album EDU 70 ANOS (2013) with a special guest, Bena Lobo. Musically Ponteio blends MPB with a touch of jazz groove, featuring a flowing melody that invites improvisation and a flexible groove. For jazz ensembles, Eric Richards arranged Ponteio for the Jazz Ensemble Library, a widely used version published by Hal Leonard that provides a full ensemble texture and open solo opportunities.
