Scotch and Soda is a folk song performed by The Kingston Trio, first released on June 2, 1958 on the album The Kingston Trio. It was recorded at Capitol Studios in Los Angeles and produced by Voyle Gilmore for Capitol Records. The song’s writer is officially credited to Dave Guard, but the trio never discovered the real songwriter’s name despite years of searching. The origin story links back to 1932, when the parents of baseball player Tom Seaver heard the tune in a Phoenix hotel piano lounge and asked the pianist to write it down; Guard, who was dating Seaver’s sister, later heard it at the Seaver home and copyrighted the piece in 1959. Scotch and Soda also appeared on the live album Once Upon a Time and was released as a single in April 1962; it has been covered by many artists over the years, including Hank Thompson, the Manhattan Transfer, and Lou Rawls.
