Scrapple from the Apple is a bebop tune written by Charlie Parker in 1947, now a jazz standard. The piece is in F major, with the A section borrowing the chord changes from Honeysuckle Rose and the middle eight in the B section based on George Gershwin’s I Got Rhythm rhythm changes. Parker recorded the tune on November 4, 1947 for Dial Records in New York, with Miles Davis on trumpet, Max Roach on drums, Duke Jordan on piano, and Tommy Potter on bass. Although tied to Parker’s Savoy and Dial era, the original recording has been released on Charlie Parker on Dial and in the Complete Dial Sessions. Scrapple from the Apple is often described as an anthem of bebop and has been widely covered by later musicians, including Gerry Mulligan meets Stan Getz and Dexter Gordon in Paris.
