Sister Sadie is a jazz standard written in 1959 by Horace Silver and first recorded for his Blue Note album Blowin' the Blues Away. The tune is a hard bop piece and Silver has said he did not know a girl named Sadie and that the title simply came to him. It quickly drew a string of covers, including Hank Crawford's More Soul (1960) and interpretations by Gil Evans, Ray Charles, Shirley Scott, James Moody, and others. Crawford's version on More Soul was noted by Silver as being faster than he intended, showing how different ensembles interpret the tune. Over the years Sister Sadie has become a widely performed jazz standard, covered by many artists and arranged for jazz ensembles as well.
