Somewhere is a show tune from the 1957 Broadway musical West Side Story, with music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. In the stage production it appears in the Somewhere Ballet in Act II and was originally sung offstage by Consuelo, played by Reri Grist; it is later reprised by the company, and Maria sings the opening lines as Tony dies in her arms. The song was first recorded for the West Side Story Original Broadway Cast album in 1957. In the 1961 film adaptation it becomes a hopeful duet between Tony and Maria, and a version of the number is used again in the 2021 film with Valentina singing. The tune has been covered many times, including P. J. Proby (1964) who reached the British and Australian charts, Barbra Streisand (1985) from The Broadway Album, Phil Collins (1996), and the Pet Shop Boys (1997) who added hi-NRG elements and a sample from Menace II Society. It remains a Broadway classic and a staple of pop arrangements, and it is often described as a hopeful ballad about finding a place for love somewhere.
