Son of a Preacher Man is a 1968 song written by John Hurley and Ronnie Wilkins and performed by Dusty Springfield. It was originally written with Aretha Franklin in mind, but Springfield recorded it in September 1968 for the album Dusty in Memphis. The track, 2 minutes 29 seconds long, blends R&B, soul and country and was produced by Jerry Wexler, Arif Mardin and Tom Dowd for Atlantic Records ( Philips internationally). It was released on November 8, 1968 and reached No 9 in the UK and No 10 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in January 1969, becoming an international hit. The song gained later fame from Quentin Tarantino’s 1994 film Pulp Fiction and is considered a classic, appearing on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list (2004) among other accolades; a 1995 re-release topped Iceland’s charts.
