The name later inspired Coltrane to title his own 1958 Prestige album Soultrane, though the Coltrane record does not include the Dameron tune Soultrane. The piece is a classic example of Coltrane’s late 1950s sheets of sound approach, and it sits in the broader Dameron-Coltrane collaboration that also produced standards like Good Bait and I Want to Talk About You. The Mating Call session occurred just a few days after a Miles Davis Milestones session, linking Soultrane to a key moment in hard bop history.
