Spiral is a jazz piece by John Coltrane released in 1960 on the album Giant Steps (Atlantic). It features Coltrane on tenor sax and Tommy Flanagan on piano, with production by Nesuhi Ertegun. The composition is known for its circular, overlapping melodies that move like water going down a drain, with Coltrane stepping back for his solos and the band exploring Far Eastern textures - a direction he would further pursue on later albums such as Om. Spiral has influenced other artists, having been sampled in Leaders of the New School in 1993 and in a 2011 collaboration by Kase.O and Jazz Magnetism feat. Kami, and it was covered by Noël Akchoté in 2016. Genre: Jazz/Blues, often associated with Hard Bop and Swing.
