Stardust is a jazz standard written in 1927 by Hoagy Carmichael with lyrics added by Mitchell Parish in 1929. Carmichael recorded the original instrumental version on October 31, 1927 at Gennett Studios in Richmond, Indiana, and Mills Music published the vocal version in 1929. Inspired by the end of a love affair and given its title by a classmate, the tune quickly became a staple of the Great American Songbook and has been recorded more than 1,500 times. It has appeared in films such as My Favorite Year, Goodfellas, Sleepless in Seattle and Casino, and its honors include a Grammy Hall of Fame induction in 1995 and inclusion in the National Recording Registry in 2004. Notable later recordings include Nat King Cole on Love Is the Thing (1957), Willie Nelson on Stardust (1978), and Bob Dylan on Triplicate (2017).
