Strasbourg/St. Denis is a jazz standard composed by the late Roy Hargrove, a trumpeter and flugelhorn player who passed away in 2018 at age 49. It was released in 2008 on his album Earfood with the Roy Hargrove Quintet. The tune is a catchy, groove driven piece with call and response between horns and rhythm section, and it’s praised for its energetic solos and lively flow. Hargrove helped bridge jazz with hip hop and neo soul, making Strasbourg/St. Denis a standout example of contemporary jazz. The title nods to the Paris Metro station Strasbourg/St. Denis, and the track has become a favorite in live performances, with notable versions by the Hargrove Quintet and, later, Candy Dulfer.
