Subconscious-Lee is a jazz composition written by Lee Konitz, who plays alto sax and provided the tune for the project that bears his name. It was recorded in New York between January 11, 1949 and April 7, 1950 during sessions with Lennie Tristano and Warne Marsh, and it later appeared as the title track on the 1955 Prestige album Subconscious-Lee. The album collects these recordings and is known for its cool, improvisational style that helped define the Lennie Tristano school of modern jazz. Some tracks from these sessions were issued earlier on 78 rpm records credited to Lennie Tristano, but Subconscious-Lee is presented as Konitz’s project. Genre: Jazz. Notable personnel on the material include Lee Konitz on alto sax, Lennie Tristano on piano on the early tracks, Warne Marsh on tenor, Billy Bauer on guitar, Sal Mosca on piano, Arnold Fishkin on bass, and Shelly Manne, Denzil Best, or Jeff Morton on drums.
