The first recording was by Music in the Russ Morgan Manner in November 1936, and its first theatrical release followed on December 25, 1936 with James Melton. Published by Warner Bros, the song is known for its dramatic, operatic feel and has become a staple in both vocal and instrumental jazz repertoires. Over the years it has been recorded and arranged by many artists, including Miles Davis in 1963 with Gil Evans and Stan Getz with an arrangement credited to Chick Corea.
