That Ole Devil Called Love is a 1944 song written by Allan Roberts and Doris Fisher. It was first recorded by Billie Holiday and released as the B-side to Lover Man in 1945. The tune has become a jazz-pop standard and has been recorded by many artists including Tony Bennett, Ella Fitzgerald, Diane Schuur, Jeri Southern and Susannah McCorkle. In 1985 Alison Moyet released her own version as a non-album single produced by Pete Wingfield; it reached number 2 in the UK charts and topped the New Zealand chart for three weeks. Moyet’s release followed the success of her Alf album, and CBS promoted it as a new offering with a music video directed by Vaughan Arnell and Anthea Benton. The Moyet version blends pop and jazz elements and helped keep the song in the public eye as a bluesy, romantic number.
