The Girl from Ipanema is a Brazilian bossa nova and jazz song composed by Antônio Carlos Jobim with Portuguese lyrics by Vinícius de Moraes and English lyrics by Norman Gimbel. Written in 1962 for a musical, it tells of a beautiful young woman strolling past a bar on Ipanema Beach in Rio de Janeiro. The first commercial recording is by Pery Ribeiro in 1962, but the international hit comes from Stan Getz with João Gilberto and Astrud Gilberto on the Getz/Gilberto album, released in 1964. The tune blends bossa nova with blues and Tin Pan Alley influences, and the Stan Getz–Astrud Gilberto version reached number 5 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and won the 1965 Grammy for Record of the Year. It is one of the most recorded pop songs in history and has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and the Library of Congress National Recording Registry, remaining a defining symbol of bossa nova worldwide.
