The Scientist is a 2002 song by Coldplay, released as the second single from their second album A Rush of Blood to the Head. It is a melancholic piano driven ballad in F major about love, longing, and apology. The track was written by the band and released in the UK on 11 November 2002 and in the US on 15 April 2003, and it sits in the genres of alternative rock, post-Britpop, soft rock and pop rock. Chris Martin wrote it after being inspired by George Harrison and finding an out of tune piano in a Liverpool studio, where he recorded the initial vocals and piano takes. The music video uses a reverse narrative and won three MTV Video Music Awards, and the cover art features a black and white 3D scan of Will Champion photographed by Sølve Sundsbø. B-sides on the single include 1.36 and I Ran Away.
