The Theme is a jazz composition written by Miles Davis and performed by his first regular quintet - Miles Davis on trumpet, John Coltrane on tenor sax, Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums. It appears on the album Miles: The New Miles Davis Quintet, released in April 1956 on Prestige, with the track recorded on November 16, 1955 at Rudy Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack, New Jersey. The Theme runs about 5 minutes and 49 seconds and has long been Davis's standard set closer. The album, which is also known as The Original Quintet, marks Davis's debut with this group and features a mix of pop and jazz standards alongside The Theme.
