This Could Be the Start of Something, often known as This Could Be the Start of Something Big, is a popular song written by Steve Allen and published in 1956. It began as part of the score for the 1954 television musical The Bachelor, earning Allen a Sylvania Award for outstanding contribution to creative television technique. In 1956 it replaced the opening theme of Allen's NBC talk show Tonight Starring Steve Allen, and it went on to serve as the opening for his other shows and for the CBS and syndicated versions of Ive Got a Secret. The tune is a bright pop standard with strong jazz and big band sensibilities, well suited to both vocal and instrumental performances. It has been covered by many artists including Count Basie, Tony Bennett, Bobby Darin, Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Judy Garland, Peggy Lee, Oscar Peterson, and Nelson Riddle, with other notable renditions by Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gormé and Pia Zadora. There isn’t a single original album release for the song, as it originated on television and has appeared on numerous artists’ albums and performances.
