Time After Time is a romantic jazz standard written in 1946 by Jule Styne with lyrics by Sammy Cahn. The first recording, by Sarah Vaughan with the Teddy Wilson Quartet, was made on November 19, 1946 for Musicraft. The song was written for Frank Sinatra to introduce in the 1947 MGM film It Happened in Brooklyn, with André Previn on offscreen piano and Kathryn Grayson later performing it in full in the same film. Margaret Whiting released a 1947 version as the B-side to Spring Isn’t Everything, and it later appeared on her 1966 compilation The Wheel of Hurt. Sinatra recorded it again in 1957 with the Nelson Riddle Orchestra, and the tune soon became a jazz standard thanks to saxophonists such as Stan Getz and John Coltrane; 1959 was a peak year for its popularity with many vocalists. It remains a widely covered song and gained a small resurgence when it featured in the 2009 film Julie & Julia.
