Time Remembered is a modal jazz ballad composed by Bill Evans. It features a deeply felt melody built on a busy harmonic pattern that evokes Rachmaninov and Chopin, with influences from Renaissance polyphony and impressionist composers such as Debussy and Ravel. The tune was first recorded in 1962 by Evans with Zoot Sims for the album Loose Blues, which was released posthumously in 1982, and the first release of a recording appeared in 1966 on the Bill Evans Trio with Symphony Orchestra, arranged by Claus Ogerman. Earlier Evans sessions include a 1963 trio recording released in 1983, and 1965 Copenhagen performances later issued in the 2023 2-CD set Treasures. The composition is built on four modes—dorian, phrygian, lydian, and aeolian—and deliberately avoids dominant seventh chords, giving it a modal, impressionistic flavor with frequent added ninths, elevenths, and thirteenths. It has been covered by many artists and, in 1994, Paul Lewis added lyrics; a vocal version was recorded by Kendra Shank on Mosaic (2009).
