Tones for Joan's Bones is a jazz tune written by Chick Corea and the title track of his debut album Tones for Joan's Bones. Recorded in 1966 and released in April 1968 on Vortex/Atlantic, the album features Corea with Joe Farrell on tenor sax and flute, Woody Shaw on trumpet, Steve Swallow on bass, and Joe Chambers on drums, produced by Herbie Mann. This release marks Corea's first album as a leader and helped launch Farrell's and Shaw's ongoing collaborations with him. The piece is widely regarded as a jazz classic and the album received strong praise from DownBeat and The Penguin Guide to the Jazz Recordings. Litha from the same sessions was later recorded by Stan Getz on Sweet Rain, and Tones for Joan's Bones and Straight Up and Down were recorded by Blue Mitchell for his Boss Horn session. The recording has been reissued on CD in various pairings and portions of it appeared on the Inner Space compilation.
