Topsy II is the B-side of Cozy Coleâs 1958 two-part single based on the 1937 instrumental Topsy. The original tune, Topsy, was performed by Count Basie and His Orchestra and written by Edgar Battle and Eddie Durham, released in 1937 as an instrumental. Benny Goodman later had a pop hit with Topsy in 1938, reaching #14. In 1958 Cozy Cole released Topsy I and Topsy II as a two-part single; Topsy I peaked at #27 on the Billboard Hot 100, while Topsy II reached #3 on the Hot 100 and #1 on the R&B chart, staying atop the latter for six weeks. Notable versions include the Count Basie Orchestra, Charlie Christian, Jimmy Giuffre, the Chico Hamilton Quintet, and Meco.
