Undecided is a swing era jazz standard written by Charlie Shavers (music) and Sid Robin (lyrics), published in 1938. The original recording was by John Kirby and His Onyx Club Boys in 1938, released by Decca as catalog 2216 with the B-side From A Flat to C. A notable early vocal version was Chick Webb and His Orchestra with Ella Fitzgerald in 1939. Django Reinhardt and the Quintette du Hot Club de France also recorded it in 1939. The tune’s biggest early chart success came in 1951 when The Ames Brothers sang it with Les Brown’s orchestra, reaching number 2 on the charts. The song has since been covered in many styles, including a bebop take by Gene Ammons and instrumental renditions by Harry James and Al Hirt, among others. It is in the key of C major, with an A-A-B-A form, and is known for its repeating motifs that foster improvisation across jazz styles. Natalie Cole later included a version on her 1993 Take a Look album.
