Unit 7 is a jazz composition written by bassist Sam Jones for the 1962 Nancy Wilson/Cannonball Adderley album - it is also known as Cannon's Theme. The tune is a swingin' jazz standard, typically played around 150 BPM. It originated with Sam Jones for that session and is closely associated with Cannonball Adderley's group. Notable recordings include Cannonball Adderley's The Cannonball Adderley Sextet In New York (1962) and Sam Jones & Co. Down Home (1962), Wes Montgomery and Wynton Kelly's Smokin' at the Half Note (1965), and The New York Jazz Guitar Ensemble's Four On Six: A Tribute To Wes Montgomery (1985). In published ensemble charts, such as Rich Sigler's Jazz Ensemble arrangement, Unit 7 features a written alto solo, a big shout chorus, and a hint of Stan Kenton.
