Watch What Happens is an English language pop standard from the 1964 French film The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, with music by Michel Legrand. The original French lyrics were written by Jacques Demy, and the English lyrics were added by Norman Gimbel. The first English recording was by The Royalettes featuring Sheila Ross in March 1965. It later appeared on Tony Bennett’s 1965 album If I Ruled the World: Songs For the Jet Set, arranged by Don Costa, and is part of the film’s score. The song has become a widely covered love ballad across genres, prized for its lush melody and emotive lyrics.
