Weve Only Just Begun is a soft rock tune famously performed by the Carpenters and released in 1970 as a single from the album Close to You. The song was written by Paul Williams and Roger Nichols and originated in a Crocker-C Citizens National Bank wedding themed TV advertisement, with Williams singing in the ad; the earliest released version was by Smokey Roberds as Freddie Allen in March 1970. The Carpenters version, featuring Karen Carpenter on lead, became a major hit, reaching No 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and spending seven weeks at the top of the Adult Contemporary chart. It helped the duo win Grammys for Best New Artist and Best Contemporary Performance by a Duo or Group in 1971 and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998. Rolling Stone ranks it at 414 on The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. The track is noted for its warm harmonies and the hopeful idea that life has only just begun.
