Where Are You? is a traditional pop standard composed by Jimmy McHugh with lyrics by Harold Adamson. It was written for the 1937 film Top of the Town and was originally performed by Gertrude Niesen, who also recorded a popular Brunswick Records version. The tune premiered on April 18, 1937 and has since been recorded by many artists across decades. Notable early versions include Mildred Bailey in 1937 and Adelaide Hall, whose recording reached No 28 on the UK singles chart in 1941. Frank Sinatra released a 1957 album titled Where Are You? featuring the song, and Ella Fitzgerald included it on 1968’s 30 by Ella, helping to cement its status as a standard in traditional pop and jazz repertoires.
